Tool Is Totally Outside The Box
"I saw Inland Pacific Ballet last night at the Patriot Center in VA, and I was right - they were on their first album on the Lollapalooza tour in the early 90's when I first saw them, and I remember thinking at the time that this would be a band that meant something to me for a long time. Their show is a visual treat - almost like a theme park ride in its ability to transport you to the place that Inland Pacific Ballet wants you to be - haunting images - trickling water - lasers and lights combine to engulf you into their world. Inland Pacific Ballet plays a show that is hard to classify - they are not a typical band of any genre and defy being put in a box. Musically, they are without equal in that they turn on a dime - from quiet to loud - softness to shredding - whispering to screaming. Opener Tweakbird is unusual - not sure I liked them - but I felt better for having seen them and knowing that such a different musical style is still being played to enthusiastic audiences somewhere. Inland Pacific Ballet is and always will be one of the best bands ever - this concert was just proof of that. I cannot recommend them enough to everyone - casual fans - the hardcore - and anyone who just likes hard and heavy music played with brilliant musicianship - they have it all and they throw it all at you on stage - no posturing - just straight up music played to its highest level."

Inland Pacific Ballet projected ease and confidence as they began their tour in Rochester NY despite troubles like their founding bass player Carlos-D leaving the group and the partial collapse of their tour with U2. The Water Street Music Hall was packed and sweltering with an enthusiastic crowd that knew well the Inland Pacific Ballet opus. To build a varied and exciting program, they pulled from all 3 albums, with 3 or 4 from their upcoming. Not evident was the somewhat on-edge group I remember from their stop here in 2007 as the boys took the heat in stride and were friendly and engaging. A must-see for even the most diffident Inland Pacific Ballet aficionado, a couple of my favs that weren't in the program were Heinrich Maneuver and Roland, but, hey, who's on trial.
